Also, they are inaccessible. Despite these drawbacks, planetary gearboxes are suitable for a variety of tasks. Excess drag may result from out-of-tolerance components or excessive lubrication. Drag should be measured both in directions and be within acceptable ranges. While grease lubricates planetary gears well, oil needs maintenance and re-lubrication every few thousand hours.
